Bondsmen pay bail, keep tabs on clients

Bondsmen pay bail, keep tabs on clients : The University Daily Kansan: "The headlights of Steve Robson’s black Ford pickup cut through the fog of gravel dust as he sped toward the house near Tonganoxie. He slammed on his brakes, jumped out and ran toward the door, a badge on his right hip, handcuffs hanging from his belt and pepper spray in his back pocket. As his son, Brock, and son-in-law, Steven, circled the house to prevent the woman from fleeing through a window, Robson banged on the door.

“I have a warrant for your arrest,” he yelled, trying to coax the woman outside.

The woman had failed to show up for her court date. If he couldn’t get her out of the house and back behind bars, Robson stood to lose $1,000. It took nearly 30 minutes, an exchange of profanities between Robson and the woman’s boyfriend and one failed escape attempt before the woman came outside. She allowed Robson to cuff her and take her back to jail.

Congressmen Back Bounty Hunter

29 Sign Letter Requesting That Duane 'Dog' Chapman Not Be Extradited To Mexico

Twenty-nine congressmen have sent a letter to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice asking her to deny the extradition of Duane "Dog" Chapman to Mexico, where he faces charges of illegal detention and conspiracy.

Chapman, who is the star of the popular TV show "Dog The Bounty Hunter," was arrested last month along with two of his co-stars after his capture of fugitive convicted rapist Andrew Luster, the Max Factor heir, on June 18, 2003, in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Chapman was released on $300,000 bail the next day. He must attend extradition hearings to face trial in Mexico, where bounty hunting is considered a crime.

Bart the bounty hunter

Former police officer happy with career change

Images of Duane Chapman's leathered face, long blond mullet and dark shades from the popular TV show "Dog the Bounty Hunter" are typically conjured up when most people think of bounty hunters.

But locally, Bart Dewald, a former South Bend Parks police officer and Lakeville deputy marshal, sheds a different light on his self-described "dangerous profession."

Dewald, an Elkhart County bounty hunter, or recovery agent, owns his own business, Dewald Bail Bonds, 101 S. Third St. in Goshen. Staff Writer Yonika Willis recently sat down with Dewald to learn more about his profession.

Bail bondsmen (and women) bust bonding myths

Have you ever watched an episode of “Dog: The Bounty Hunter,” and thought to yourself, ‘I can do that’? Many people do.

But unlike characters such as Duane “Dog” Chapman from the A&E reality series, the real lives of bail bonds issuers involve more careful calculations and reading between the lines than most think. David Valentine agrees.

Valentine is a bail bonds issuer who has been in the business for more than 20 years. He has an office Downtown on Washington Street and one in the St. Nicholas area on Atlantic Boulevard. Valentine says Chapman’s portrayal is seen by most bondsman as mere “entertainment.”

The popular TV character depicts a person who claims to be a bondsman/bounty hunter going out and doing “pick-ups,” said Valentine, “but most of our lives are nowhere near as exciting or as flamboyant as what they’re depicting on a weekly basis.”

Valentine said bond issuers may be able to relate to some small anecdotal pieces of what Chapman and his family are doing. Overall, though, that’s not the way things work.

“You certainly couldn’t make any money if you were constantly out looking for people,” he said.
